A Community Developer - 2020 Public Summary

Throughout my time with FACTSnet, I have had the opportunity to work primarily on supporting other employees and various administrative tasks. My role as a mentor was mainly responsible for completing final checks on projects and supporting employees’ career and personal development during their time with FACTSnet. I have had the privilege of not only enriching my own personal and career learning through classroom assignments, but also assisting other staff in their learning as well.

A large portion of my time during my summer job was on COVID-19 and Leadership courses via Google classroom. I completed an array of assignments related to different areas of life regarding mental health, finding personal balance, communicating positively and effectively, as well as practicing goal planning. These two courses allowed me to build additional leadership skills and understand how I can implement the knowledge into practice as a teacher or into other careers. As a leader, we often referred back to our DISC personality report to aid in our career and personal development. The report provided me with valuable information regarding how my personality and leadership style operates when working with others.

Moreover, I invested a section of my time into creating the FACTSnet 15-30 University of Calgary network. I had the opportunity to be the leader for the University of Calgary team and I worked closely with the IT group in order to create the blog. Each staff was responsible for conducting a web review for the faculty they are currently in. Thus, I was responsible for completing a comprehensive U of C Education Web Review for the University of Calgary. Furthermore, I completed another web review of the accessibility services for students with disabilities. This web review has been completed and passed on to the next team leader to be edited and published on the blog.

Finally, towards the end of my summer position, I transitioned important information over to other employees who will be taking over my tasks. We had meetings to ensure duties were transitioned off smoothly and that tasks were clear for the new leaders. From this type of work, I gained experience in working collaboratively and had the opportunity to utilize the knowledge and skills from the three courses to communicate effectively with others.

Overall, I gained very valuable experience working with FACTSnet and I am greatly grateful for that.

Raela - 2020 Public Summary

Right now, I am at the University of Calgary working towards a Bachelors of Science in Psychology. I plan to get into the Honors degree stream, which will prepare me for a Masters of Science in Clinical Psychology. Following that, I plan on getting my PhD. After school, I would like to become a therapist that works with at-risk teenagers and youth, specifically in Indigenous populations. As a Métis woman, I want to give back to my community and I will do so by providing Indigenous populations with access to the mental health services that every community should have. Furthermore, using my education and skills to help others improve their mental health is something I believe I will really enjoy. The skills I have learned while working at FACTSnet will help me reach these academic and career goals.

I had two main roles while working with FACTSnet this Summer. Firstly, I researched mental health during COVID-19 and used that research to create both a blog post for the FACTSnet website and assignments that people could use to assess how the pandemic has affected their mental health. Second of all, I was responsible for reviewing and editing documents about Global Soul Wellness topics. These documents were then posted on the FACTSnet website for public use.

In the first half of my term, I researched Soul Wellness during COVID-19. I used databases to find psychological articles relating to mental health and mental disorders during COVID-19, and I read research pertaining to how people have been coping with isolation and social distancing. I compiled key points from these articles into a working research document, which is accessible to the whole Soul Wellness group so that we can all use each other's research materials.

In the second half of my term, I finished the Mental Health During COVID-19 blog post and completed other mental health assessments and blog posts. I ensured that these documents were publishable and ready for the public to use. For the Mental Health During COVID-19 blog post, I focused on the following topics: the immediate impact and long-term consequences of COVID-19 on mental health, how one can protect their mental wellbeing while social distancing, the impact of this pandemic on families, and places to volunteer for COVID-19 relief. I also wrote a Remove the Elephant blog post about taking small steps to care for your mental health, and a mental health assessment in which people can take different mental health inventories, answer questions, and see how their mental wellness has been impacted by this pandemic. Finally, I completed the Areas of Growth project. I went over the Self Care, Balance, Story Time, and DISC Relationship Series assignments for the employees doing the CIN certification, and gave them suggestions for areas of growth in their lives.

One skill I have developed while working with FACTSnet is the ability to work from home. At first, I found myself getting easily distracted. However, it is now much easier to focus since I have learned strategies and tools that keep me on task and help me work efficiently. Another skill I have developed is collaborating with a team. Completing projects with my coworkers and learning about the DISC model of personality taught me how to work with others more effectively.

One weakness I have identified is that I take on too many tasks at once. This makes me overwhelmed and I am unable to give my full attention to every task. Instead, my focus becomes fragmented which is counterproductive. I am working on this by keeping a daily planner and only taking on commitments that I know I will have time for.

One task that still needs to be done for the Global Soul Wellness project to be complete is the introduction to the Global Soul Wellness Annotated Index. I have started this task, but there needs to be more information added to make it complete.

A Community Developer - 2020 Public Summary

I worked on some administration tasks such as updating my progress report, planning report, and master document. As a supervisor, I was required to attend all the meetings (Admin, Core, Team, and General) and check other employees’ reporting standards. I was also the lead for FACTSnet 15-30 where I updated the team progress report, planning report, and master document. On top of this, I updated the team members with the tasks we expect them to complete for the week. I make sure that I constantly check in with them regarding weekly progress and concerns they have for the tasks.     My main priority for this summer was to focus on Web Developments for the University of Calgary. I researched the Faculty of Science for this Post Secondary and put them together in a Web Review (U of C: Faculty of Science). I helped edit the Disability Review created by my peer. Although I did not put any content, I also edited the U of C: Faculty of Werklund Education and U of C: Faculty of Arts. All of these documents were then put into publishable. I also updated the Youth Organizations created by past employees and put them into a single document for cohesiveness (Youth Organizations). As part of my major project, I am currently working on the Newsletter: FACTSnet 15-30, also to be used and published.     As a second priority task this year, I was placed to work on checking Web Reviews done by other employees and making sure that there is consistency with the formatting and working links. These web reviews were created for Schools, Churches, Organizations, University Clubs, and the Communities in Alberta. I also worked on some school web reviews myself in Calgary Middle Schools. This task was continuous throughout my employment as other employees add more of their finished web reviews and I have been informed.     For the School web reviews, I completed all the Cut and Paste For High School, Middle Schools, Elementary Schools, and French Schools where the working links are put together based on their category. I started working on the School Master Contact List where I compiled contact information from each school for easy access.     As mentioned above, by working with FACTSnet this year, I was able to further develop my leadership capabilities, but I also learned how to effectively lead people with different personalities, even if I still need practice doing so. Also, I was able to work on my research skills and become more comfortable with leading people in my team. The DISC Report, which was one of the assignments that we were expected to finish this summer, helped me realize my personality type and how I can work well with other personality types. This became especially handy during meetings or collaborations with my peers. To read about my work from previous years, see my 2018/ 2019 Public Summary.
